The origin of this fruit was south America.its popular various name like pitaya,moon lover,Night blooming(),strawberry pear,belle of night,Condrella plant etc.Over time its cultivation has spread to south eastern asia s well,and it is a quite common fruit in the country of china,Thailand,Vietnam, Srilanka ,Israel.This plant is treated as a ornamental plants as well as fruit producing plant.This fruit can be used in jams ,jelly,ice cream,fruit juice and wine production.

Types of dragon fruits-

Three types dragon fruits are found

Soil Requirement for Dragon Fruit cultivation

In Dragon fruits cultivation  mostly requires sandy loam or clay loam soil. The sandy soil is better for the dragon fruit cultivation.Soil should be plough until soil is well tilth and  free from weed. The require pH of soil is between 5.5 to 7 . Before plantation applies any organic manures and compost on the soil in good ratio .Good drainage system play a  important role for dragon fruit cultivation. sandy soil with organic matters provide better production in dragon fruit farming.

Dragon Fruit Planting Instructions

There are basically two methods for Dragon fruit  farming

First one-
  • You can directly cut the dragon plants with a knife and divide it into two parts. Then scoop the black seeds out of the inner flesh and wash off the extra pulp. You can use this seeds for cultivation but it takes longer time for growing plant and this method is not appropriate method for commercial cultivate.
Second method
  • The second method is cutting the 20 cm length of the plant from the mother dragon plant before two days of a plantation.Keep this cutting piece in a pot with a mixture of dry cow dung, fertile soil and sand in a ratio of 1:1:2 before cultivation. Avoid excessive sunlight from these cut piece it is better if we place those cut pieces in shadow area .

When you begin cultivation, place the space between each plant of 2 meters x 2 meters in a pit that is 60 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm in size.Fill each pit with 100 grams super phosphate compost.The land of 1 acre contains some 1700 plants of dragon fruit. Place the support of concrete or wooden columns for proper plant development and growth.The concrete or wooden columns are very important for dragon fruit farming.

Fertilizers Of Dragon Fruit Farming

Each dragon fruit plant requires 10 to 15 kg organic compost or fertilizer to grow well.In dragon fruit production, organic compost or fertilizer can play a major role in the expansion and growth of plants.

In Dragon fruit farming  40 grams of MOP, 90 grams of superphosphate and 70 grams of urea  need per plant during the vegetative phase.

To obtain a high yield of dragon fruit, apply a high amount of potash and a low amount of nitrogen to a plant in the fruit bearing phase.

Take 50 g Urea, 50 g Super phosphate and 100 g muriate of potash and spread this fertilizer on  plant root from flowering to harvesting stage.

Irrigation Of Dragon Fruit Farming

Many irrigation systems are available in the latest technology, such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, micro jet irrigation and basin irrigation, but dragon fruit plants require less water than other fruit cultivation systems.

Drip irrigation is therefore an efficient and better system for irrigation of dragon fruit plants. Irrigation often requires a different phase of fruit production, such as planting, flowering and fruit development.

Harvesting Of Dragon Fruit Farming

The dragon fruit plant produces flower in May to June  and fruits from Aug to Dec month.After one year of planting, the Dragon fruit plant  begins to bear the fruit. 

 Dragon fruit is ready to be harvested after a month of flowering. The immature dragon fruit has a bright green skin. After 5 days latter, the fruit skin become red in color.The best time to harvest dragon fruit is 3 to 4 days after the fruit changes its color of skin. The hand and the sickle can be used to pick the dragon fruit from the plant. You can expect an average of five to six tons per acre of dragon fruit.
